West Lake Park and Anne Kolb Nature Center
The Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park is a remarkable mangrove eco-system that invites you to explore its brackish 1,500-acre realm by paddle, bike or foot. Rent a canoe or kayak for only $7 and paddle through the tidal channels deep in the mangroves. The three paddling trails, each only a half-mile from Hollywood’s oceanfront Broadwalk, might as well be on the moon.

Another way to view the haven is on the pair of boardwalks that cross the mangroves 1,200 and 1,500 feet, the shorter with a simple Noguchi-like bench framed by a gazebo overlooking the lake. Pamphlets and interpretive signs help guide visitors inclined on their own. Low buildings that barely top the mangroves explain the eco-system with photo exhibits, aquariums, a film screening room. Visitors can hop aboard a U.S. Coast Guard inspected 25-passenger covered boat for a narrated tour of the tidal creeks and open waters of West Lake.

Still one more way, a five-story tower rises 68 feet and throws open views of the entire watery realm, ocean to lake, north to the airport and seaport and south to a more recreational portion of this preserved coastal realm.
